Is Education Worth It?

The following words are my opinion.

Lately I have been thinking about education and my education particularly and if it is worth the time sacrificed and obviously the money spent.

I have been fortunate enough to graduate with a B.S degree with no debts and understand that this is not the typical situation. As I am beginning my Masters degree this fall, I am now bombarded with extremely high tuition costs and fee’s.

The fact of the matter is this: the world is very Competitive. Which means, you have to prove yourself worthy.

I see my education as proving myself to the world. With my Masters degree and my future certificates ( CPA ) my future employers will know that I am going to be an asset to their company. Without my education, this competitive edge does not exist and I am less competitive.

You get out of your education what you put into it.

Anyone can go to class, not pay attention, turn in assignments and BS on the tests and get B’s and C’s. Those who value their experiences, take assignments seriously and truly apply yourself will get their monies worth from their education.

The point of the journey is not to arrive.

There is no reason to be in a hurry. Enjoy being a student because the time you have as a student will soon be over.

Get Uncomfortable

You do not grow until you get out of your comfort zone. This is a huge aspect of education and I would encourage students to look for opportunities to get in situations that are out of your comfort zone. I believe this will make your education more worthwhile.

Finish what you started

Don’t get frustrated and give up. Things will be hard, but it will be worth it when you tell yourself you made it through. No one wants a quitter.

Fictional Books – Beneficial Too

I went through this weird phase where I started thinking that fiction was not worth my time. I was in a trance ” non fiction is the only way to go..” …”you can only learn from non fiction..”

Now I am realizing that you can learn valuable things from fictional books too. Not only is it exhilarating to escape life and enter into a different world, a different persons shoes, another character’s point of view but you can also apply the decisions those characters make in response to their made up world to your own life and potential choices.

I have read a few fictional books the past month.

I started reading the Stormlight Archive, which is this huge world building fantasy series by Brandon Sanderson and I was blown away to say the least. The different characters and their stories called to me and immediately got me hooked. If you haven’t read them, I encourage you to do so. The third installment, I believe, is coming out this November.

TheWayOfKingsUnknown

Currently reading The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. This book is also amazing. I love the rich history of the world he creates, the myths and legends that impact the main character. The way he writes just begs you to keep going and never stop. I am only like 250 pages in and I am looking forward to find out what happens to the main character, Kvothe.

Unknown-1

My point, is that, fictional books are often overlooked and can offer great insights to a growing education.
